Â
Today IÂ walk, not wanting to.Â
Â
          Tender toes spread rootingÂ
           inside sneaker’sÂ
           slap of sound,Â
           sense soil underÂ
           unforgiving sidewalkÂ
                     Oh toes!Â
                     Today you blithely ramble,Â
                     no pebble in your shoe.Â
Â
Today I spring, not meaning to.Â
Â
          Haunch muscles tightenÂ
          release, tighten releaseÂ
          a storm of strengthÂ
          in flowering fascia,Â
          large, lioness tendons
                    Oh legs!
Today you make me feel Â
I shall win the Valley of Elah. Â
Â
Today I breathe, not thinking to.Â
                   Â
        Rosy pink-lobed lungsÂ
        unbounded diaphragmÂ
        dance in long, drawn rhythm,Â
        push air and twirl,Â
        sing space and swirlÂ
                   Oh breath! Â
                   Today your millionth mouthful comesÂ
as if it were the Sixth Day.Â
Â
Today I care, not liking to.Â
Â
        Halt my busy breakfastÂ
        go sit by his sideÂ
        hold his hand, listenÂ
        what’s wrong, my sweet?Â
        sun in my voiceÂ
Â
                 Oh heart!Â
Today you swell in spite of yourself,Â
                 You have not forsaken me.Â
Â
Today I know, not seeking to,Â
what a prayer is…Â
                The day we createÂ
                The soul in mercy returnedÂ
                The heart, even so,Â
                forgiving and forgivenÂ
