I entertained a couple of angels the other day.
There was nothing remarkable about them.
They were just grateful for a casual hello.
Their interest in me equalled my curiosity about them.
The ordinariness of our exchanges was sublime;
kindness politely revealing itself through deference.
I live with people who like to be treated as gods.
They feel everyone owes them something.
Money affords them the right to be indifferent.
Wealth insulates them against compassion,
and pity is a weakness they can’t afford to share.
The heavens are populated with their wanton greed.
I may only see angels once in a lifetime,
but what an impression they’ve made.
No buzzing or ringing of cell phones,
no intrusions, nothing to erode their humanity.
News of worldwide catastrophes flood
the newsfeed just as they’re about to leave.
I may never see them again, but I am reminded
what it is to be divinely human.
