Hear the Voices: A Prayer for Refugees

Hear the echo of voices from Egypt,
Cries of sorrow and tears of despair,
Sorrow for firstborn children slaughtered
On the altar of Pharoah’s power and greed.

Hear the cries of indigenous people,
Grieving the loss of children and land,
Their songs silenced and history forgotten,
Walking with death on a long trail of tears.

Hear the cries of the mothers and fathers
Whose children were stolen and lost.
Driven from home by war and oppression,
Waiting in vain at the border of freedom.

Hear the voices of the 25 million
Seeking refuge, shelter and home.
Afghanistan, Mexico, Jordan, and Iran,
Bangladesh, Syria, Uganda and Ukraine.

May the day come soon
When the arrogant are humbled,
Greed is replaced by compassion and love,
When there are no more strangers wandering the earth,
And all people have finally found welcome and home.

Blessed are those who wander.
Blessed are those who gather them in.
