Thinking About My Funeral

A tall tree with a thick brown trunk and a rounded green leafy top under a blue sky with white clouds.
Art by Cydnee Weber

The green burial cemetery
lets me choose forest or field.
They allow only natural materials:
a small marker carved from native stone,
a wooden box, even just a shroud.
I’d like a wicker basket.
My friends will stand
among the trees
saying Kaddish.

I’ve heard that forests
communicate through their roots.
They are writing Torah.
I will join them.
