Lamentation for Hosea son of Nun

an old olive tree with many branches and green leaves providing shade
Oh Hosea son of Nun,
Delivered by Yah from:
The arrogance of Rahab,
Those yet to be erased,
And to a mentor’s care.

Like him, you married:
Rachav, a full human.
Like Zipporah: strange,
Broad-minded, wise.
You, your wife’s family.

Mentor became father.
His wife, your mother.
Your wife, a path home.
Clever in war, learned:
You wanted kindness.

You found clay, trees,
And built a new home.
Sweetness overflowing,
Creations abounding,
Family surrounding you.

This is the wisdom of:
A simpler life in trees,
Turning like the wheel,
Molded by each turn,
And nevermore to flee.

The wisdom of slowness:
The afternoon shade tree,
Your weary feet stilled.
This is the worth you saw,
The peace you sought.

And I mourn for you,
I cry, oh soul ancestor.
For your lost childhood,
Your spent decades.
Come home, come home.

Come home and rest,
Remind us of peace,
There is more than war,
In the broad land we love:
May she too come home.
