I saw thousands of lights go out in Gaza,
as millions of faces light up in Israel.
Thousands of abducted children
are re-educated in Russia;
a mother says she knows best.
A presidential comedian debuts his routine
but no one is laughing.
His deadly joke is on us; the terrified ones.
We created this mayhem in the night time
because our hearts were full of fear,
and now we must live in its shadow.
This beautiful planet walks on a tightrope.
We hold our breath.
One wrong step, and into the unknown
a man falls from the skyscraper
hoping there might be a better life
after death;
a sober life that values life,
a life that renounces the craving for finality.
Where children learn love, not hate,
and where the light never goes out.
