We set off walking
steering blindly away from
the ashes of the past
the path, all desert dust and sparkling possibilities for a future we longed to create
No one knew it would take 40 years
of manna and complaints
and lugging everything we owned
on our backs for so long
that we bore both children
and grandchildren along the journey
combating our mistrust
our understandable fear of the unknown
to find something resembling home
Our bones became more brittle along the way
as we longed to quench our unending thirst
with more than just water
only to arrive in the land
and wonder if all of our rapturous dreams
were for naught
If we only we could find a way
to rest our weary heads
