What is this place we’ve come to?
This land of commonplace drudgery.
Here, where every journey
shuffles along in dull civility.
Here, where we crawl on our bellies
through slime and dirt
in the place we now call home.
To think,
we fought giants to get here,
sang our way through dry sea beds
until we found a place to call our own.
To think, we sought this place out,
and prepared our hearts to settle.
But now we’re here, it’s not
the promised land we hoped for.
We live in the belly of a slug
that digests us daily in its juices.
It stultifies us until we surrender to its
slow unending appetite.
I look back through time,
tracing our pathway here, wondering:
When did we lose the joy of wandering?
When did we relinquish
our curiosity to sluggishness?
Love, hear our prayer,
awaken adventure in us again.
Save us from this slavish need
that blinds us to a divine purpose.
Lift our eyes to the mountains,
so our hearts can take flight
unfettered.
Set us free to wander again
where all journeys end in wonder.
Come, love, breathe into us
a passion for life that makes us
strangers to all that is not loving.
