Behar Behukotai

Dedicated to Rabbi Yael Levy

Who are we to think we have ownership?

Who are we to think we are above the laws of consequence?

Who are we to expect a city, a land, to be ours

When we have not yet earned it?

We stood at the foot of the shaking mountain,

And were told, through our prophet,

That we are merely sojourners:

That the Source, itself,

Is both Owner and Provider.

Our lives are held within the boundaries of HaMakom,

And our living moulded by the laws of the Holder.

Three times a day we remind ourselves to evolve;

That all will be redeemed

When our judges remember

Who they are called upon to be –

That it is Hesed v’Rahamim,

Tzedakah v’Mishpat,

That lays waste our enemies’ plans.

Our elders and the righteous

Are sustained, and supported

After the great shofar has gathered us in

When Your Presence permeates every street;

Your immediacy, woven throughout every intention;

Our salvation, assured by Your deliverance,

When we return to face You,

Surrendering our steps

As we follow Your way home.
