Baking Cakes for the Queen of Heaven

green olives on an olive tree

(Jeremiah 7:16-20; Jeremiah 44:17-19)

On market day
I choose the finest flour
the most aromatic olive oil
sweet libations in graceful ewers
the children at my skirts
hop in anticipation

My husband stokes the fire
with wood the children gathered
I knead the dough –
an offering for the Source of all

In the oven
flour and oil and water
transform into sacred wholeness
the kitchen thrums
with joy and possibility

Families hurry to the high places
the groves – lush and green
full of Her gifts –
shade us from the heat

We offer our cakes
at the foot of Her trees
pour our libations
onto the dust of Her Earth

We praise, we dream
we pray, we hope
birth and destruction
exulting and grieving –
our offerings celebrate
the Oneness of life
the Sacred All
