The Offering of the Olives

That the oil
lasted more than a week
when we needed it most
is a miracle.

It gave us the eternal flame
–the ner tamid–
and allowed us to rededicate
and repurify
the temple.

But those eight days
weren’t the only
offering of the olives.

When even the tiniest wick flickers
it’s a miracle
that from all corners
high or low
even the faintest spark of light
can reach
and illuminate us.
