The Hardened Heart of Pharaoh

a statue of the Pharoah wearing an Egyptian headdress
Was pharaoh taught to love
or did the accident of his birth stiffen his heart?
Did the preparation for kingship
replace his rich redness with stony grey?

Was his chest filled with ever hardening veins
too thickened to allow even a meager flow?
Called to rule and care for all
not even the call from above could wash him clean.
