Morning Psalm: A Mourner’s Qualm

A black bird perches on bare branches in soft light with blurred trees in the background.

May we build this world from love,
May we rise in peace, as different creatures
Wisely formed
Whole and One
Olam chesed yibaneh
May yesterday dissolve like a pill in the rain
“And you shall be a Blessing”
And you shall wear pairs of underwear for different days of the week
And you shall sip the pickle brine from the jar
And you shall finish a meaningful book
And you shall see the mountains from up high
And you shall find peace in the bathtub
Modeh ani l’fanekah, melekh hai vikayam
I utter breathlessly in half darkness
Forming a lopsided smile that somehow also frowns
