Mindful Intentions for Lighting the Candles

A menorah with two lit candles stands on a table, with a blurred background and mirror reflection.

Intentions for each day of lighting the Hanukkiyah

These 8 days connect to the light of the S’firot – 7 days for the lower tree, 8th day for the upper spiritual tree

Shamash

I light this candle in gratitude for this light that is a helper and ignitor for all the other flames. Let it fill me with strength, endurance, and inspiration to add light, each day, to the world. I am grateful for those I love, for those I share time, for those I share work, and for the Divine couple of holiness.

1st Night – Malkhut/Shekhinah

I light this candle for the grounding and support of mother earth and reminded to be a guardian for Her survival.

2nd Night – Y’sod/Foundation

I light these candles for the good fortune to have love in my life. This night reminds me of the foundation faith and hope have in generating life, creativity, and holiness.

3rd Night – Hod/Humility

I light these candles for the light that reflects my desire to remain humble and grateful in all ways.

4th Night  – Netzakh/Eternity/Action

I light these candles tonight for the inspiration I receive for my actions to do good and the ability to contribute to others well-being.

5th Night – Tiferet/Beauty/Harmony

I light these candles to nurture my efforts to harmonize the polarities in my life in order to find balance and beauty in the way I live.

6th Night – G’vurah/Strength/Boundaries

I light these candles to nurture my strength and courage while defining healhy boundaries between work and family.

7th Night – Hesed/Loving Kindness

I light these candles to fill my heart and be aware how it pulses with kindness and compassion for myself and others, especially those who hurt, suffer and feel pain.

8th Night – Bina/Knowledge, Hochma/Wisdom, Keter/Crown of inspiration

On this last night lighting every branch of the Hanukkiah, watching these 8 candles burn brightly and allowing the warmth and beauty of the flames to flow within my soul, recognizing Torah as the source of knowledge and wisdom, being crowned with pride and gratitude for this festival of lights.
