A Meditation for Rosh Hodesh Shevat

though you laid siege to the holy city*
enslaved the trees for your embankments
and scattered us as seeds to the wind
our roots lay nestled in the ground
and despite years of lying fallow,
the trees and we, too, did bloom.
the secret is not in our survival
but how our tears sowed a home we never left.
