Meditation for Remembering Lost Loved Ones

Come, let’s go back (really I mean deeper). Come down and follow the string, the line of bread crumbs and dear memories, back through the spiral of time, reaching with all your might towards the center. And remember; remember who you were when I was still in the here and now? Remember how old you were? How big? Remember what your world looked like back then? How time has a way with change: never quite what you expect, always more powerful, with more art… and so also more pain…

Remember what you used to call me? – what I used to call you? Names are a funny thing, being more a reflection of the ties between us than of you or me or whoever alone. Now, when you call to me my name is the flick of a match going ablaze or the spark from the flint of a lighter. Now, when I holler back it’s through sensory-inspired memories, and wisdoms I shared – intentionally or not –, and the age shown on paths we once walked together.

I wonder how they’ve changed. I wonder how you’ve changed, how memories of me have changed… I wonder what it’s meant for you to call out to me… what it means now… I wonder if you hear me call out to you, if not from right now then from your own past, your own memories… what it means for you to hear me, or not…and when do you hear?

And remember when I left? – when I left the here and now, or maybe the here and now left me… Do you remember how you felt? Who you were? Do you carry that “you” to this day? I wonder what I left you in my absence… I hope it’s for good, or you turn it into good. I hope you’re well. I hope your memories serve you well, however they serve you.
