May Memory Outlast this Pain

A torn paper heart hanging on a string against a dark background.

My heart
is torn in two —
red hair and freckled cheeks,
a mother’s arms forever reaching.

And on another side,
children whose names the world never learned,
mothers who died calling for their babies,
fathers buried beneath silence.

Grief pulls in every direction,
too heavy for one heart,
too vast for one soul.

There is no comfort.
Only tears
for children whose faces we knew
and children whose faces
were never shown.

May love be softer than this sorrow.
May memory outlast this pain.
May peace come —
too late,
for too many,
but still —
may it come.
