Choosing Love

Close-up of a sunflower in warm, golden sunlight, with a blurred background of trees and a glowing sky.

It is said that the unexamined life is
Not worth living
But a lifetime of deep contemplation on
The biggest questions can wear you out

Sometimes, an insight breaks through, like
A luminous ray of sunshine after days of
Tempests and blackened skies

And you may realize that while Gd put us
On this planet of horrors and injustice
He also gave us a choice

The choice is like a golden key:
To choose love each and every day
Choosing love when it’s inconvenient
When the choice seems the hardest
When it may even put you in danger

And though we never reach perfection
And our thoughts and actions ride the
Stormy waves of this perplexing life

We’re capable of inflicting immense pain
Or giving enormous love
The choice is always ours
Each moment as the present flows
Into the future and its infinite possibilities

And when we choose love – especially when
Turning against it would be easier –
That’s when the light of Gd burns
Brightest inside of us

And maybe that can guide us
When the biggest questions weigh the heaviest
