Brit Mikveh | A Convert’s Covenant

Woman underwater blowing bubbles, with light rays filtering through the water from above.

In the beginning
Before sky
Before light
Before day
Before night
There was water

Water
And Darkness
And God

Drawn like Adonai’s breath over the surface of the deep
I’m drawn to the blank canvas of water before me

The Brit Mikveh
What flesh am I to offer?
What is my holy sacrifice?

I cut through the water like my spiritual ancestors who walked on dry land
The mikveh etches my renewed self into stone

Feet tucked and fingers splayed
My spirit is made new

Sacred water enters each cell
Now I carry Miriam’s Well in me

Mitzvot mikveh
Hallows us and seals us

We open our mouths
To declare that Adonai is one

We celebrate life
And emerge from the water

This covenant, unbound by missing flesh, ushers in the evolution of spiritual surrender that can be committed again and again.

Amen
