Ashes: A Poem for Tisha B’Av

a field with clouds waving across the sky above it

There are ashes sunken within us
in places that feel too deep to touch
from losses so great
we thought they would break us
from failed attempts
that taught us lessons
from missed opportunities
that brought more questions
from things long gone
we can never recover
from things we can still reclaim
as we learn and discover
from things we’ve been mourning for so long
we forgot what we were grieving
from things we were glad to lose
and were grateful to watch them leaving
from things that were stolen
right out of our hands
from things we let go of
and mislaid plans
from endings we didn’t
make space to weep for
from complicated losses
we haven’t yet explored
we are here now to express this grief
and in this community
may we find relief
Ken yehi ratzonso may it be!
Amein v’amein — we have faith and believe!
