Exodus 1:8
A new king arose who did not know relationship, who had no access to empathy, understanding or compassion. A new king arose who demonized others and ruled through oppression and fear.
The book of Exodus also tells us that as this tyrant took power there arose strong, courageous women who would not be frightened into submission.
The midwives, Shifra and Puah, were instructed by Pharaoh to kill all the male children born to Hebrew women. With awe and courage, they defied this horrific decree and made sure all the children lived.
Yocheved, at great risk, chose to bring new life into the world, and Moshe was born.
Miriam, undaunted by oppressive laws, stood on the shores of the river and made sure that her brother would be safe.
Pharaoh’s daughter refused to let hatred or fear determine who she would be. She saved the life of a young Hebrew boy and raised him to adulthood.
We are in a time of tyrannical leadership.
Let us call on the determination and faith
of our mythical ancestors to help inspire our defiance.
Let us be bold and imaginative in our actions,
and loving and kind in our deeds and speech.
Let us notice beauty and raise up goodness.
Together we will plant seeds of justice and peace.
