Nourishing Body and Spirit: How to Plant a Jewish Garden

January 30, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EST

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 12:00 pm on Monday, repeating until February 13, 2023

$180

Gardens can have many purposes: providing food, beauty, medicine, tranquil space, and wildlife habitat. They can be corners of quiet refuge or social connection. They can even be places to explore and enrich your Jewish practice. A Jewish garden can range from a plant or two on a balcony to hundreds or thousands of plants on an extensive piece of land. In this immersion, we will discuss ideas and practicalities of creating a Jewish garden. Participants will walk away with the knowledge of how to grow a wide range of plants, incorporate them into their everyday Jewish life and practice, and explore the interactions between their Jewish garden and the world around them. Participants will receive three plants (chives, bee balm, and mint) to start them on their Jewish garden journey.

Mike Brown Michael Brown is the author of The Jewish Gardening Cookbook, published by Jewish Lights. For the last 20 years or so he has been developing Pitspone Farm, a small suburban farm focused primarily on perennial berries. One of the goals of Pitspone Farm is to explore the small farm experience and show others that the dream of farming and contributing to the food stream is within reach for many of us. With a recent move to hilly northern New Jersey and the purchase of an acre of land “on the side of a mountain,” Michael is delving into permaculture and reforestation with native species.

The session will be recorded and sent to participants. We encourage live attendance for you to get the most out of the experience.
