A Prayer for Losing a Friend Too Soon

two people sit on a dock looking out over a lake

….
….
Breathe in, breathe out…
For he/she cannot breathe anymore.

El Malei Rakhamim, what strange truth is this?
Our days are numbered, this we know,
but, his/hers, my friend _____________,
who would have known that his/hers were numbered so few?

There will be time,
for this and that,
at least that’s what we said,
but, for _________, there isn’t.
There wasn’t, there cannot be…

El Malei Rakhamim,
One of Compassion,
Knower of Truths,
_______ left so much undone,
he/she had so much more left to do.

Now, the burden of doing, of being,
falls squarely on our shoulders,
those that still
breathe in, breathe out.

The news left us still
Unmoored
Unbelieving
Unnerved
Still reeling.

El Malei Rakhamim,
may our memories
turn to blessed action.
May his/her dreams
be fulfilled
in every one of our breaths,

In…
&
Out…
