An Offering

two people hold hands in a grassy field who are wearing identical pink wristbands that say "camping"

You offered to take me to lunch; a Rabbi had introduced us
You offered to walk with me around Queen Anne Hill, holding my hand
You offered to take me out again.
What was the meaning of these offerings?
Were they the foundation for more?

I invited you for Shabbat dinner
You offered to pick me up early,
You offered to set the table and clean up before the guests arrived
When the guests left, you offered to wash the dishes
Voluntary gifts from your heart

I told you I was moving to Los Angeles
You said, do not change your dreams for me
You offered to help me pack
You drove with me to Los Angeles
And purchased a lemon tree for my balcony
Were these sacrifices?

You offered to buy a house with me in LA
You proposed at our Passover seder
These gifts from your heart secured my love.
We planned the perfect wedding
Intimate, white flowers, classical music, flooded with light.

If the wedding was our birth as a couple
Then 13 is our B’nei Mitzvah
Our Torah portion is Terumah — Offering
We our offering ourselves again to one another
We shelter together at home
where flowers and art and our lives
have been knit together by love.
