Billboard Blues

a car driving at dusk
I’m driving on 295 in South Jersey
weaving in between the cars
with bumper stickers
ranging from “Trump 2024”
to “teach tolerance”

A billboard catches my eye
and I catch my breath:
Bring them home now.
It’s a visceral reaction,
my heart filling with fear
my eyes filling with tears

And I wish I had special wipers
that could wipe away the tears,
the pain, the anger
Wipe the slate clean
so we could try again
for peace, coexistence

I reach for the radio
and switch to Apple Car Play
so that I can fill the void
with my favorite Israeli tunes
and sing along through my sobs.
