But One Journey

a person in shadow bent in grief
We each have but one journey over all the ages.
For some it will last only briefly–
taken from us at a totally unexpected moment,
perhaps ended by the anger of another.

We are allowed to continue on the path–
aghast at the loss of those departed,
enraged at the violence of the other,
fearful of the reminder that our journey, too, can be abridged.

Into what space do we turn on our winding ways
to the place of tears and grief?
To the unknown darkness of hatred and more evil?

Or do we dig deep into our confusion for understanding, forgiveness and love.
