Yevava: The Cries of the Mothers

tree in the sinai desert
The cries that carry
from one end
of the earth
to the other.

The cries
passed between,
one mother
to another.

The cries
so loud
that they cannot
be heard.

Lips, mute,
as a multitude of
shofars blow,
fully open
the arteries
of their hearts:

Sara’s drowning Teruah
in the wake
of her son.

Sisera’s mother’s
Shevarim breaking through
the lattice
returning without carrying
any answer.

Heart-searing
Tekiah gedolah
in surrogate Yael
as she plunges toward
her irreversible decision.
