Avinu Malkeinu: Light In Face of Darkness

Avinu:

You shattered the vessels containing your  lights.

And shortly after, I smashed my father’s statues and stood alone in the fragmenting dark.

That’s where you found me, Avinu.

Starving and angry,
I went out in search of the land You promised me.
And in my quest to please, held a blade to my son’s body.
The idols, laughing darkly, and never far behind.

It is time to leave the idol shop.
To look beyond the insular broken pieces.
To crack through our collective pain.
And recover the hidden light.

Not the light inside idols but the light that came from heavenly vessels.
Imploring us to remake the brokenness
By piecing ourselves together, whole.

So that when we are seek You, Avinu, we do not sacrifice others or even our own soul.

Rather, we rise in the presence of Your light, loving others with a shine so bright it rivals all the stars of heaven and illuminates the path to the blessed Land you promised.
