Self-Rescue: Prayer for Tending to Ourselves During Marriage

arms reaching from underwater
Just when I thought the deep couldn’t get any deeper.
It did.

And there we were.
Falling.
Slipping further and further into the murky bleak.

And you grabbed hold of me.
And pulled me further under.
Your love was not the anchor.
And your arms were not the life boat that carried us back to shore.

Despite the failed reaching,
All we ever needed
Was to draw forth our arms
And legs.
And swim far away from the other and far away from this place.

Rescuing our own selves
Was really the beginning
Of breathing life back into
Each other.
