The Rebel’s Prayer

How do we turn to a text
That people have used like the twist of their backs
To turn away from total strangers?

And how do we turn to a People
Who have put a fence around tradition designed to keep others out?

For those of us who have dared look closer
Run the risk of becoming pillars of salt with our questions
Or being swallowed in some pit of the earth for our rebellions.

Encourage us to plead, like Abraham, against any and all destruction,
Especially in Torah’s name.
And lead us to speak up
For the sake of all the living and the dead.

We may be dust and ashes
But our lives our worth something.
And our disagreement is worth everything.
