At Sea (for Elul)

small yellow boat
How do you steer this thing?
Which end is helm and which is the stern?
Where did that white water come from?
And how do I pry the boat from these rocks?
What if I fall in?
What if I lose sight of my port?
Could it really be true that You know how this ends?
That You’re writing a book–
Publication:  10 Tishrei?
If so,
Then why does it still seem to matter
How well I row the oars?
If “those who go down to the sea in ships
Have seen the deeds of the Lord,
His wonders in the deep,”
Then what of me in this miniscule dinghy?
Who composes my sea shanty psalm?
Who sings it?
Who   hears    it?
