After Diving into the Wreck

Those times I’d visit the dark alone,
refused all offers of a light, known
to cast shadows that might fool the eye–
such a trusting one like mine
young and so willing to believe
every outlandish thing he’s told–
it’s a God who if you follow
might follow you as well.

So far, I have only earned this talisman,
given to all who come of age:
Me’chayil el Chayil, the congregation assured
May you go from strength to strength–
though this would never be my luck or right.
Then, other voices tried to buck me up:
L’dor v’dor–such little use, this talk
of generations in wait.
What about me? the here and now, I say,
as bodies float by, mostly face down.
But these are the friends I had known.

Meantime, this little boat takes on water–
my own frantic bailing keeps me afloat.
Gift of a God who provides the comfort
such mindless work invokes?
