A Kavanah for the Hebrew Month of Av כַּוָּנָה לְחֹדֶשׁ אָב

A willow tree with yellow-green leaves hangs over calm, reflective water in a natural setting.

A sandal in the dust.
Grain that sits, uncarried.
A name called out,
no answer.

עַל אֵלֶּה אֲנִי בוֹכִיָּה
Al eileh ani bokhiyah
For these, I weep.
(Lamentations 1:16)

We know what it is to starve behind walls.
Now the walls bear a name we recognize.
Where we once reached for crumbs,
now the line for flour draws gunfire.

יוֹנֵק וְעוֹלֵל בִּרְחֽוֹבוֹת קִרְיָה
Yoneik v’oleil birchovot kiryah
Infants faint in the streets of the city.
(Lamentations 2:11)

A fridge with no formula.
The shuttered clinic a town over.
Pills split in half to last the month.
The check that still hasn’t cleared.
Mammograms missed.
A friend whose cough never goes away.
The facts blacked out on the page.

I scroll past what the world is carrying.
I don’t know how to hold it.
My bedroom is quiet.

Let Av hold what hurts.
Let it draw us near.
To remember we are still here.
And still able to feel.

כֵּן יְהִי רָצוֹן
Ken yehi ratzon
May it be so.
