Sanctuary

I sat in shul this morning and listened to the prayer fervor:
the hum of words being recited, the solemnity of familiar tunes being sung,
a chorus of voices carrying heavenward.
And as I faced east, I noticed the sun peeking through the nearby windows
upon the fine, polished wood of the scroll-like aron adorned by a colorful hand-crafted parochet.
Karnei hashemesh. The sun’s rays.
The beams dispelling any darkness —
the hand of God at work.
