A Narrow Bridge

A person walks on a wooden bridge over a misty river in a foggy landscape.
I throw my pain into the open space
I want to not be owned by it
I don’t want this
standing here
sun burning down
mountains of Moab at our back
Not a day ago we looked at them
purple
We smiled
Now it’s lonesome here
this desert threatens to swallow us
along the San Andreas line
despite our earthquake first aid kit
I want to ask you for forgiveness
I need you to ask me, too
Trust my words, although
I have not always spoken truth
I am now
Don’t let this last encounter be
of strife
alienation
Let’s not burn the narrow bridge
although one day
it may collapse
due to erosion inside the structure
For now, let’s walk on it, not afraid
