For Jewish Girls Who Say “No”: A Meditation on Consent

No is the one who left the building

And the community
Before Yes was first proposed and No was disinvited from the party.

No is the unexpected death.
Act 7, Scene 3.
Yes leapt from a balcony.
And amidst the blood and the breaking.
No was defiantly, creatively born
Screaming.

No is that spontaneous combustion.
A woman’s first magic trick.
Inside the home.
Inside The Book.
Inside herself.
So she could waltz in when everyone least expected her, and cha-cha to her first solo dance of creative destruction.
