This Morning’s Prayer

a hiker looks to the sunrise in the mountains

Modah ani. May Emunah in me strengthen my resolve to continue to evolve into
deep knowing that my discernment is valid and true
as I have let go of my anger at you, my former friend.

May all our dissensions fall away
as we stand face to face and speak heart to heart without
artifice or self-interest.

Let our wonder and interest in one another’s views
allow for renewed connection, offer direction and correction
of self-centered fears.

Until this possibility,
please accept my continued service
to the community with the spirit of love and unity I offer
as I say the misheberach for your husband,
as we sit in classes and services together.

Modah ani from my depths that you choose to continue to attend.
I choose kindness if we can’t have connection.
And you seem to have mellowed to this same conclusion.

We can’t afford the pain or the strain of dissension in times that threaten our extinction.
We needn’t resort to the comforting groupthink of who’s right and who’s wrong,
thronging for safety and security rather than the maturity of listening/

Please ground us and lift us to understanding,
notwithstanding my desire to continue to do the right thing.

Maybe, even if you tarry, ani maamin
Deep in my heart I do believe that we shall overcome some day.
One day.

Modah ani
We are lost without You
Be with us in compassion, while allowing our passions to mature and grow
in the fertile ground of community and unity in the hope that our differences
will push us forward, not back.
