When the angels
were building you in my womb,
they gave you the sweetest knobby toes,
the most kissable belly,
soft golden hair,
eyelashes long as paintbrushes
and dimples to spark joy.
As they admired their work,
God joined them and smiled
adding your brave, truth telling soul.
Will they be man or woman?
the angels asked.
They are neither and both, said God.
What if the people don’t understand?
worried the angels.
This child will teach them, said God.
They will share their unique soul and those who know them will know me.
