The Temporary & Sacred | Before They Came Home

Two people decorate a sukkah with greenery; a table with food sits inside under a bamboo roof.

The air inside us is still
as we breathlessly await
the release of the hostages

toes on the ground
eyes on Israel
hearts searching for an exit
from the waiting room

as we wait
we rebuild
the sukkah
with the stubborn hope and joy of Jews
eating and dancing
in a temporary dwelling place

Temporary and sacred
like the arms of your loved one
like this earthen spacecraft we call mother
like our homes adorned
like the body of your lover
like our temples made of stone

may those returning home
find comfort in the permeance
of rebuilding and reaping
a harvest of joy
unmatched in abundance

Amen
