No Exodus

Close-up of vibrant red leaves covered in raindrops on branches, creating a lush, colorful autumn scene.

This time around the plagues strike everyone: algae-thick, the beach
stinks with dead fish, and frogs croak among the spinach plants,
delighting wide-eyed children with slippery leaps. The kids are glad
the slime spoils the spinach.

You missed the bugs? Ticks cover the hairy skins of forest moose,
ride along with deer, with fieldmice. This time they carry Lyme
disease, longer lasting than simple Covid, crippling even the avid
hikers. No vax for this. Watch out!

I suppose the wild animals prowling the towns are not so bad
this time around. There are coyotes in Central Park, and squirrels;
don’t leave the trash loose, you’ll draw bears onto suburban decks,
photogenic until doors break.

Let’s skip pestilence. No sense rehearsing how the shutdowns ached,
checking for masks, scrubbing hands. Terrified grandparents, locked
doors at nursing homes. The Egyptians saw pets die too, so it’s good
our cats seem immune.

Don’t show me boils; shudder! A vaccine for that? Hailstorms, well,
we’re watching TV news of deep and wind-thrust snow on highways,
multi-car pileups, school buses sliding into ditches. You can’t count
bridges failing. Cicadas are not locusts.

“Denial is not a river in Egypt,” say the T-shirts. Has darkness
settled upon us? Ninth plague? Can you see the way forward? Where is
your candle, your head torch, your solar spotlight? Let no icy death
threaten all firstborn—

say the names, feed the fire, and let this people rise.
