Away from home

a black and white photo of two soldiers

Inspired by the veterans in my life

Left our homes, with love or hate towards our families
With nothing but reverence for the red, white, and blue
Putting on our uniforms with pride in the country
We were called to serve and protect

Went out in the world, following orders to honor our forefathers
preparing to go to war where the dust lies

witnessing abominable things, nothing but bloodshed and death
still standing for the flag and now kneeling for the fallen

Home again, now with a heart for our countrymen
Bringing back the heartache and pain of war
still looking out for our fellow soldiers in need
those we’ve always sworn to protect

Standing at ease, paying attention.

Took an oath to leave no citizen or soldier behind
Bury the dead in a field in the homeland
While kneeling for the fallen, with the flag half staff

A soldier who serves out of love.
Not for glory or the money.

Who knows the sacrifice made when the wolf growls at the door.
Strongly stands for their loved ones to protect.
