Jocheved, After

A woman sitting alone in the desert
The woman conceived and bore a son.
–Exodus 2:2

Amram and I agreed, to save
our baby’s life, I would lay
his basket among the reeds
in the shallow water. The child
had suckled my breast, but
would call another mother.

Away from our eyes, Moses became
a man, became leader, husband,
father. Amram became dust. My turn
will come soon. Our son
followed G-d, crossed the sea,
lead his sister, brother, others.

Too ill, too old, too slow, I stayed behind,
watching as they reached the eastern shore.
