The Lights in December

lighting all white hanukkah candles in window with reflection of candles
Dark December mornings
when we hover like hummingbirds
in the far reaches of the solar system
And the sun rising late in the southeast sky
Morning candles lit in preference to electric

Dark December evenings
when we watch dusk approaching after lunch
And the sun barely skims the horizon
Searching for its place to descend
Candles lit amidst Barukh atah Adonai
For a short while the lights mingle harmoniously
Punctuating the winter darkness outside
