Creating a Name Portrait

November 9 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EST

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, repeating until November 16, 2022

Our names carry stories of who we are, where we come from and who we might be. Some believe a name is a reflection of the soul. In this immersion, we will experiment and play with drawing self-portraits in words. In a meditative, self-reflective and supportive environment, you will be invited to write about where you come from, where you are presently and where your heart desires to go. The icing on the cake—we will look for a biblical “name pasuk” (name verse) that has personal resonance and add this into your portrait and story. No art experience or Hebrew knowledge is necessary. Come as you are.

Supplies: Use tools and materials you already have, or choose from a list of suggested supplies Sonia will provide.

Sonia Gordon-Walinsky is an artist and educator working primarily with Hebrew and English calligraphy on paper and in clay. She is widely known for her unique personalized Torah artwork that she calls “Name Pasuk Art.” Pasuk is the Hebrew word for verse, and a name pasuk is a biblical verse that begins with the first letter and ends with the last letter of a person’s name, or otherwise contains the letters of a name. Sonia travels (in person and virtually) to synagogues, schools, and other communities to teach about this kabbalistic tradition, and engage youth and adults—with a special focus on intergenerational groups—in choosing a meaningful name pasuk, as well as other “Judaism through art” experiences. She creates Name Pasuk Artwork as well as ketubbot, baby blessings, and other liturgical and ritual artwork for all life-cycle events. Sonia is a graduate of Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, and studied at the Drisha Institute as an arts fellow. Sonia and her mother, Nina Gordon, have exhibited their artwork in group exhibits in NYC and Philadelphia, including an annual exhibit at the Jewish Theological Seminary.

All sessions will be recorded and sent to participants. We encourage live attendance for you to get the most out of the experience.
